Joomla Features & Benefits

Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS). Out of the top 10 content management systems as of May 2015, Joomla comes second after WordPress. Joomla caters to small businesses, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and large corporations like Citibank, eBay, Harvard University, Ikea, McDonald's and Sony.

In addition to its core features, Joomla offers many advanced features that you won't find in every content management system.

User Roles

Joomla's Access Control List (ACL) allows you to manage the users of your site, as well as groups. You may define as many roles as required to address the various user types on your website. A user may be assigned to one or more roles, dependant on the access levels you want to provide that person. User roles provide a mechanism for restricting or enabling access to features, content and sections of your website.

Captcha

Joomla employs Captcha as a mechanism for blocking spam on your website.

Cross Browser Compatibility

Joomla is compatible with all major browsers, such as Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Content Authoring and Publishing

Content development is through a simple browser-based interface. Any user with the appropriate roles and permissions can write from any computer (or mobile device) that has Internet access to your Joomla site.

When managing content, organization is a key requirement. Being able to create categories with nesting and no limits on depth is a great plus in helping manage large websites.

When categorization is not enough to structure your content, Joomla supports tagging. Website administrators, content writers and content managers can enter a list of keywords that determine the content item without having to predefine the list of categories.

Authors can choose when to schedule content items that will appear on the website. Using this feature, authors can create content well in advance of when it needs to appear on the site, allowing Joomla to manage when the content should appear and disappear from the site.

Joomla offers versioning. You are able to track exactly who made what changes, when, and if a version note was entered. If needed, you can revert to any previous version of the article.

Joomla includes the ability to email, save as a PDF file, as well as generate printer-friendly content items.

Responsive Website

Joomla provides an optimal viewing experience—easy reading and navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning and scrolling—across a wide range of devices (from desktop computer monitors to mobile phones.)

Media Manager

The Media Manager is the tool for easily uploading, organizing and managing your media files and folders. You can even handle more types of files, thanks to the configurable MIME settings. The Media Manager is integrated into the Article Editor so you can access images and all other media files for easy usage and enhancement of your written content.

Support for Rich Media Types

Joomla supports a wide variety of rich media types, including pictures (e.g., galleries, carousals and slideshows), video, audio (podcasts) and animation.

Custom URLs for a Content Item

Joomla has the ability to generate search engine friendly URLs for articles created.

Menus

The Menu Manager allows you to create as many menus and menu items as you need. You can structure your menu hierarchy (and nested menu items) completely independent of your content structure. Breadcrumbs are automatically generated to help users navigate your site.

Powerful Extensibility

More than 8,000 extensions are available to extend your website and broaden its funcionality, including:

  • Calendars - Sites may have departmental or category based calendars, as well as site-wide calendars.
  • Polls - Create one or several polls running on your site at the same time. Joomla provides an easy to use method for tracking results and viewing votes.
  • Blogs - Simple to use blog interface for each user with proper roles and permissions.
  • Discussion Forums - Create and administer multiple online conversation forums. Visitors can submit comments, but the administrator has the ability to approve posts before they are shown on the website.
  • Web Forms - An HTML form on a web page allows a user to enter data that is sent to a server for processing. Forms resemble paper forms, because web users fill out the forms using checkboxes, radio buttons or text fields. There are also tools for downloading submissions as an Excel spreadsheet.
  • RSS Feeds - Joomla provides the ability to automatically generate RSS feeds from content created on your website, such as blog entries, news headlines, audio and video. An RSS feed benefits readers who want to subscribe to timely updates or to aggregate feeds from many sites in one place.
  • eNewsletters - Visitors register to receive newsletters (via email), as well as manage their subscription(s) through an easy to use online form.
  • Google Analytics - We will install and configure Google Analytics as part of our installation.
  • Social Networking - Allow your site visitors to post links of website content to one or more social networking sites. Integrate your site with Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and other social networking sites.
  • Automatic Backups - Automatically backup your website.
  • E-Commerce - Joomla provides a rich solution for online product catalogs, managing orders, credit card and online payments, delivery management, inventory management, customer management, returns management, etc. Functionality also includes a feature-rich reporting capability, as well as the ability to export transaction data into an Excel spreadsheet.
  • Multilingual - Joomla is the most popular and widely supported open source multilingual CMS platform in the world, offering more than 64 languages.
  • Integraton with Third Party APIs - Create custom interfaces to import/export information to/from your existing applications.
